That is not all they approved.

First, about the 6A. All it really does is change the name of each classification except for 1A DII. Starting in 2014, what we now know as 5A will be called 6A, 4A will be 5A, 3A will be 4A, 2A will be 3A, 1A DI will be 2A and 1A DII will be just 1A.

Second, UIL did pass to add a 4th team to playoffs in all team sports in 3A and 2A starting next season.

Also, UIL passed referendum for 3A supts. to vote on making the current 3A football districts to DI and DII districts like 2A and 1A. If passed by supts, this will start next season as well.

UIL has voted to eliminate 1 tourney from basketball, baseball and softball. Starting next season a team can only play 2 tourneys and not 3.

You mean we finally get a 6A classification and it won't fix the discrepancy in enrollment numbers and talent pools we've been dealing with in the 4A and 5A playoffs?

Please tell me this is a back-door way of making a real 6A classification over time.

That's what making DI and DII took care of. In order to do what you are asking, you would make 6A a mega classification with very few schools. Travel for district games would be terrible and completely ridiculous in some cases.

It didn't fix anything for us. In 2010, PN-G, a middle-of-the-pack 4A school, faced a "Division II" Manvel team that for all intensive purposes had 5A enrollment numbers. I can't tell you how many times we've competed with borderline 5A schools like Friendswood and Pearland Dawson with about 600 more kids, more talent and more money in UIL or band or whatever sport. Divisions haven't solved anything.

And I realize a division is an entirely different concept at the 1A and 2A levels (and 3A after next year). But for them, they've often times been even worse. WOSgrad just brought up Deweyville and Anderson-Shiro. If you ask me, Katy has a lot more money to spend on travel costs than they do.

Seriously though, AAW and I have had this conversation many a time so I can tell you that his previous post is dripping with sarcasm....it is just not readily apparent from a computer screen.  Liltex has it right, this is a money thing.  The UIL gets 15% off the top on all gates for football playoff games starting with bi-district games...you do the math and you will see why the current system will not be replaced (just expanded) anytime soon.

More money for the UIL. An already watered down playoff system
How would you like to be the 1 team in a 5 team district, that did not make the playoffs ;D

I think the reason they can't make the 6a we're all talking about is strictly because of travel. Splitting the lower classifications and having playoff games with 3500 people would make the same money as letting a weaker high enrollment school in due to attendance they would have at the game. Where would you make the cutoff for 5a though? 3500 gets you a district with Deer Park, NS, and the next closest school with that type of enrollment would be Westfield. After that you would be looking at one of the Cy schools for another member. Except for the Cy or Plano districts, schools that big just aren't that close to each other. 5a division 1 and two are pretty evenly split, the issue is when you have Dayton playing 4a D2 against Manvel who realigns to 5a but the two bigger schools in the district stay 4a?

I agree with you DP8036, but with the old system, no offense to Deweyville, but you guys didn't stand a chance at the postseason in 10-2A...we (Buna) made it 3 times in 6 years and we are a big 2A school.  The Pirates best bet is to keep a select few kids at home on 'count' day and assure yourselves of dropping to 1A.  There will always be someone getting the shaft with the numbers game.  There has to be a bottom and a top limit, I understand that.  But how about splitting districts up, higher / lower.  21-3A should be Silsbee, WO-S and BC for the big school title and Buna, OF, HF and HJ for the small school based on enrollment.  Of course, Newton blows the whole smaller schools can't compete with larger schools theory out of the water, with the lowest enrollment in 10-2A by 40-50 kids.
And the number difference in small schools of 100 kids does by percentage make more of a difference than 200 to 300 kids makes in 4A. But in 1998 Newton was the fifth smallest school in all of 3A and won the small school title. There is never going to be an "equal for all" answer. Nature of the beast. Dollars drive nearly anything in society now days. UIL is no different.
