freeze 1914 Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 I thought HJ was made up of athletes that couldnt make it at West Brook and Central and Ozen to be honest. Surprised me that they have that many kids in the sour lake area

Surprised me that they have that many kids in the sour lake area
The vast majority of HJ players have grown up in the HJ district and played in the HJ Little Dribblers Program. That's what troubles some people. Considering the fact that this is a small and fairly rural community, they have been able to compete at a high level in basketball for many years. Do they get a move in periodically? Sure, every school does at one time or another. However, they never have 40 transfer applicants in a single fall prior to school opening and they never continually have 5 or 6 players at 6'5" to 6'8" who can play that "just happened to be in their district". In fact, my guess is that the Yates district is one of a very few who amazingly produces this types of players year in and year out. It doesnt take a brain surgeon to know what's going on. If you dont want to call it recruiting, thats fine. But most fully understand the situation.

EVery other division played a complete season along with a post season tourney and it finished last week.

Guest Air Bisquit Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 6 pages of complaining about Yates ::) ::) Some HJ fans would have a coronary, if they were ever to get moved into 21 3A (not going to happen) ;D ;D

I am the only one complaining about Yates and I have been doing it for several years-long before HJ had to play them. They dont belong in 3-a let alone 21-3a and even at the 4-a level, they have means of acquiring players that most of their competitors do not. Its the truth and everybody knows it.

If the uil said they are playing within the rules quit complaining or go to the HJ school board and ask that they start a communications program and become a magnate school. Then y'all can get all move ins ;)
Honest Abe Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 There IS a difference between complaining about something and simply stating FACTS as Nash is doing. It has become very clear that some people would rather speak their opinions as TRUTHS and simply ignore the FACTS. This conversation HAS been going on for more than just a few weeks. It has been debated on SETXsports for at least 3 years now, and I doubt it will die down any time soon. After next year, Yates will no longer be 3A, but I know Nash will continue fighting the fight against Yates bc of how they 'acquire' their players. I agree that they should NOT be in 3A or 4A. If they want to 'come together' and play as if they are the best, then allow them to move up to 5A and play against the best. Maybe there should be a division where schools can recruit legally and play against each other......Oh wait, there IS a division for that, it's called COLLEGIATE SPORTS!!!

pallacanestro Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 I would venture to guess no other HS program has "hometown" listed on their roster. You have to admit that is funny.

AggiesAreWe Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Again, it's my understanding from a person in the know of Yates basketball that 6 of the 15 listed are what you consider "homegrown" players. The rest transferred in as freshmen or later. Take that for what it's worth because I simply do not know how the elementary and middle school systems in HISD work as to what high school a student attends.
Dick Vitale Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 HISD has open enrollment. They USED to have zoning, but that ended several years ago. Whatever school that you initially enroll in as a 9th grader becomes your "home" school as far as athletics go. Students are NOT allowed to transfer within the district and play varsity sports, they must play sub varsity for one year unless there is proof that the students family has moved into that area, and that has to be verified before varsity eligibility is granted. It's a flawed system and kids transfer, but it's not a problem that is exclusive to Houston.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 I remember a kid from Reagan transferred to Yates about a year ago. He had to play JV. I remember about two years ago a kid from the Cy Fair area transferred to Yates. He played JV. Both of these players were DENIED the chance to play for Yates' varsity their incoming year. Now, will someone please tell us who has transferred to Yates and is not suppose to be playing varsity????? If you don't know, you need to shut up!!! 8)

That's why in my opinion UIL needs to step in and do something different. When you add in charter, private, and magnet schools it really makes it difficult for the true public schools to compete. Look at 1A right now with El Paso Harmony Science Academy playing Triple A Academy. How can a true 1A rural school compete with that???
Savant19 Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Yates only lists 2 seniors....so the feeder middle schools have only produced 6 varsity players the last 4 years ? Did the rest of the guys quit basketball ? Were they magnet programmed to another campus for non athletic purposes ?There are roughly 500 kids "zoned" to Yates that attend another school. Im just sure you Recruit Police have verified none of them play sports at the "non-zoned" school they attend.
