Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Lee Roy Jordan, Sam Huff. Jack Lambert came a little later but was cut from the same cloth. Those guys were all a different breed. Tough as nails. Butkus was the cream of that crop though.

hopefully so. Argyle is good, but they're young. HJ has all the experience you can ask for, and has played a brutal schedule. Always kinda nice to get to state and have already played 7-8 teams better on your schedule than anyone there.

My dad really liked him and loved to tell a story that was I’m sure a “stock” one for Jan. He would tell people about a game where he was so bad he couldn’t make anything. He said he was so mad after his 4th missed FG, he went to kick the bench and was lucky he didn’t break his foot. Because, as he would tell it, he was so bad that day he missed that too. 😂

The 5a boys regional tournament will be played at Campbell Center in Aldine…

I don't think that they would play locally. They would meet in the Regional Finals which I believe is played in Katy. I may be wrong on the location though.

You’re always going to have those whining, crying, and pitching a fit calling for a coaches job. They’re waiting in the wings to pound their chest when their team falters and can’t wait to throw it out there, “I told you so.” That’s never going to end when it comes to small schools. Those types remind me of a bunch of seagulls. All squawk.

Many playing back then had other jobs. Playing hurt meant you got paid. Winning meant more then you can be on a 1-13 team now and still make millions. There are many great athletes in the game now but it’s mostly athletic celebrities entertaining just for the dollar bill. my grandfather played when there was no face mask. Played on the oline…..many broken noses to the point it was crooked the rest of his life. You were either tough or you got cut back then.

I tend to agree. Yates won the first two meetings, '13 (Reg. Q) and '14 (RQ). Silsbee won in '17(Reg. Final) and '18 (RF). Yates won in '19 (RF) and then Silsbee won last year, '21 (Area). A Tiger win tonight would have Silsbee winning 4 of the last 5. I agree, all the games have been great. I honestly think Silsbee should be up 4-2. Let that '19 game get away from them. Should have won that one. But, I also think had Silsbee not lost to Life Waxahachie regional semis in '20 (a game they should have won) they most likely lose to Yates in regional final.

I must have missed that gem. I do remember one basketball aficionado posting that Whitmire was one of the most underrated coaches in our area. That guy is almost always right by the way.

Teams had to change some of their favorite plays because of Butkus. When asked why he hit so hard, Butkus said he didn’t want the player to have to get up and look to see what numbered jersey tackled him……he wanted him to already know it was Butkus. Butkus would also call QB cadence and was known for spitting on the football while the center was about to snap it. He was one-of-a kind. This is from memory before watching this video.

I actually voted for Cruz in the primaries. Of course when Trump became the Republican candidate it was a no brainer to vote for him over Hillary. I never took Trump serious until he got into office an started putting America First in his decision’s. HJ certainly has the ability to win by 40, but if they are up by 20+ in the late third or fourth, I bet they slow the game down and play keep away. Doubt they win by 30 or 40 for that reason. Give me HJ by 25. 63-38

Athletes on par with most in the state , but let’s be honest BISD doesn’t do what it takes to keep or attract great coaches… BISD made this a “stepping stone” job , while It should be a dream job. With the Athletes, history, recruiting location, etc, coaches should be knocking down the door but instead you got a school like 6A WB who went to State but the coach left for a 4A LCM, or back in 2009 When Coach Stowers took a Central team 4 rounds and had a team just as good coming back but left for a DFW job. . Think about those Stump coached WB teams, Is never been about the athletes, They’re going to be there, is everything else. So while I hate coach Graham did that, and is really bad for the kids, can you blame him??? Yea it might not be a bottom tier job as far as athleticism is concerned but unfortunately is more than that.
