Best QB was not even the statement, ole Melon stated Nederland has not had a "Decent QB in many many years" Not sure the time frame many, many years is but I think B. Butler was early early 80's so i'll go back to the 1961 state runner up team & Jake David at QB who lead the team to the last Nederland state title game appearance. I am sure he was a very good player at the QB position to get his team to state championship game, but since Ned lost 6-0 to Dumas maybe some people think he was a disappointment also? There has been some decent, bad, good & very good QB's at Nederland since '61 & i agree Delage was a very good one.
-
Disappointment Based on what? Fernandez was a winner & that’s what the bottom line is, right? Give us ur good Ned QB’s. Sage Seay stepped in & played well, Raines was a solid QB. Dustin Hood, Brad Sullivan, Delage, Dean, Moshier were some good players also. How far u want to go back? Havard, Spell, Robbins, Kip McFarland, Barrow, Billy Butler?
-
‘18 (Fernandez) & ‘20 (Cunningham) QB’s were good all district players, put up solid stats, led teams to 10-2, 9-3 records, district, Bi district titles. ‘20 team made it to 3rd rd. Both guys stepped in to play QB & did a great job leading the team to successful winning seasons. ‘19 (McMorris ) QB was good, very accurate & skilled passer & ended up breaking a few Nederland passing records including single season passing yardage. Team that year just didn’t get on the winning track consistently.

2023 5A State Semi Final Boerne Champion vs. Argyle The nightcap would feature Boerne Champion versus Argyle. Aiden Smith was on the bump for Boerne Champion with Gage Goldberg catching. Park Prater and Hunter Sandifer were the battery for Argyle. Boerne would get on the board in the top of the first. Jordan Ballin walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and advanced to home on a error by the catching on the throw. Argyle’s Colton Roguemore matched the leadoff walk. With 1 out, he was gunned down by Gage Goldberg trying to steal second. Grant Kinzel started the top of the second with a single up the middle. Quinn Grable walked. A double by Gage Goldberg scored Kinzel from second. Argyle went done in order bottom of the second. Two walks in the third forced an Argyle pitching change. Reid Ross came in to pitch with a runner on first. A groundout and a strikeout later and Argyle are back in the dugout. Argyle generated a little traffic in the bottom of the third, but Smith was able to pitch around it. At the end of the third it was 2-0 Boerne Champion. Argyle would have 3 hits in the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately for Boerne Champion pitchers it was batters not balls. Combined with two walks, means that Argyle score 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2. Boerne Champion would go down in order in the top of the 5th. Grady Emerson would lead off with a walk. Alex D’Angelo recorded the first hit of the game for Argyle. Park Prater hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Emerson. A single later and Boerne Champion would change pitchers again. Rowdy Miller game in to pitch. Miller would balk to score a run before getting a fly out to end the inning. It was 4-2 Argyle at the end of the 5th. A leadoff walk by Sam Miller was negated after a fly out to left. The next batter, Quinn Grable lined one to JC Davis at short. Davis made a great play and then doubled off the runner at first to end the top of the sixth. A single and a stolen base by Grady Emerson followed by an error moved him to third. Park Prater would drive him in with a sacrifice fly. The top of the seventh was uneventful for Boerne Champion. The game ended on a 4-6-3 double play. Argyle advanced to play Magnolia West on Saturday. WP – R. RossLP – J. Melanson Player of the Game: Reid Ross -

2023 5A State Semi Final Frisco Reedy vs. Magnolia West The 5A State Semi Final games would get underway albeit a little late due to the rain delay in the 2A game. Frisco Reedy would feature Will Johnson on the mound with Caden Jones catching. Magnolia West would throw James Ellwanger with Caylon Dygert catching. James Ellwanger comes out throwing heat striking out the first two batters. He topped out at 97. He would hit Jalen Stringfellow. No damage was done as he struck out the next batting looking. The lone runner that reached first for Magnolia West was erased on a nicely turned 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. In the second, Ellwanger picked up where he left off striking out the side. Will Johnson would do much of the same. A fly out, a walk and two strikeouts and the inning was over quickly. Ellwanger records three more strikeouts to end the Reedy side of the 3rd. Magnolia West began to generate some offense in their half of the 3rd. A leadoff single by Hayden Carpenter and a ground rule double by Dawson Park would put the first run on the board. Cody Palacious added to the total plating Park with a single. Ellwanger recorded two more strikeouts in the 4th before the first non-strikeout out was recorded to end the top of the inning. Magnolia West couldn’t score anyone during the bottom of the fourth inning. Another 1-2-3 inning for Magnolia West from a ground out to third baseman Caldwell McFaddin, a ground out to catcher Caylon Dygert and Ellwenger’s 12th strikeout of the game. Jack Jorgeson took the mound for Frisco Reedy in the bottom of the 5th. He would give up a single to Cody Palacios with one out but retired the other 3 batters faced. Ellwanger continued to dominate the Frisco Reedy lineup in the top of the 6th with 2 strikeouts looking and one swinging. Magnolia west would get one insurance run thanks to an RBI single by Jackson Blank scoring Caylon Dygert. In the top of the 7th, with 2 outs, Caden Jones would bust up Ellwanger’s no hitter with a single up the middle. Ellwanger would strikeout two more. His no hitter was busted up by Caden Jones on a single up the middle. Ellwanger hit pinch hitter Gavin Barker. He had reached his pitch limit and Caylon Dygert would take the mound. Three pitches later, Magnolia West had secured the win. They will advance to the State Championship game on Saturday to face the winner of Boerne Champion and Argyle WP – Ellwanger LP – Johnson Player of the Game: Carson Wallace -

2023 2A State Championship Game The clouds rolled in for the 2A State Championship game between the visiting team Harleton and the home team Shiner. Shiner featured Drew Wenske on the bump with Bryce Nerada catching. Harleton would throw Dylan Armstrong with Mason Clark catching. Harleton would go down in order in the top of the first. Shiner would get Wenske on first due to advancing on a drop third strike but couldn’t do anything else. Offensively, the first inning was uneventful for both sides. Someone gave Harleton new bats in the top of the 2nd. Back to back lead off singles and a walk would put the pressure on Shiner. Add a couple more singles and an error and the score would quickly become 6-0. Shiner could do nothing to counteract that offensive explosion and went down in order. Harleton couldn’t repeat the prior inning performance. They went down in order in the top of the third. The highlight of the bottom of the third might have been the 1 hour and 39 minute rain delay. But the important thing for Shiner was after it was over they were able to hit a couple of singles that scored 3 runs. Kennan Haley hit the first one and scored Lehnert and Carson Schuette drove in Peterson and Haley. The Wildcats kept the pressure on Wenske in the 4th. Two hits, one an RBI single by Gage Shirts, forced a pitching change. Carson Schuette took the mound for the Comanches. He would record outs on the two batters he faced. Armstrong would not show any effects of the rain delay facing just four batters, allowing no runs. Harleton scored two runs in the top of the 5th off just 1 hit. Shawn Booth led off with a walk. He advanced to second when Tanner Tate was hit by a pitch. Peyton Murray would ground out to second and move the runners up. That out proved to be critical as two wild pitches lady, Booth and Tate score. The Comanches would muster two hits in the bottom of the 5th inning but that was all the offense from them. In the 6th, back to back doubles, scores Gage Shirts for the Wildcats. The next three batters would go down in order. Shiner also went down in order in their half of the inning. Schuette would walk the leadoff batter in the 7th, record 2 outs then walk another before Landyn Pohler took the mound for Shiner. Pohler would throw just 1 pitch as Gage Shirts would fly out to Ryan Peterson in center. Shiner would score two in the 7th inning but that wouldn’t be enough. Harleton would win the 2023 2A State Championship. WP – Armstrong LP – Wenske Player of the Game: Carson Wallace -

2023 1A State Championship Game Today, 1A Baseball would have a new team to call State Champions. These teams have met 3 times in recent history. In 2017, Abbott defeated Fayetteville 11-7 to win the State Championship. In 2018, Fayetteville beat Abbott 11-7 to win the State Championship. They played in a tournament this year to a 9-9 tie. Abbott started Preston Pustejovsky on the mound and Will Kazda catching. The Lions started Jack Schley on the mound and Logan Fritsch catching. Abbott took advantage of a walk and a error to score the first run of the game. A couple of fielder’s choices later and the Panthers would have a 2-0 lead at the midpoint. The Lions would go down in order in the bottom half of the frame. Schley looked a little more settled in the top of the second. He sat the first two Panthers down on strikeouts before hitting Mason Hejl. Hejl would steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch but that is as far as he would get as leadoff batter, Riley Sustala grounded out to shortstop Travis Gully. The Lions got their first baserunner of the game when Travis Gully reached on a error. He wouldn’t get past first. At the end of 2 innings, the score remained 2-0 Abbott. Abbott bats would do some damage in the top of the 3rd. Two singles forced a Lions pitching change. Another single, an error and a balk gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead at the midpoint of the third. Preston Putsejovsky got two quick outs before hitting Kegan Supak. Supak wouldn’t get far as the next batter popped out to short. Reid Gross gives up just one hit in the 4th when Will Kazda singled to center. That was all the offense the Panthers could get. In the bottom of the 4th, Logan Fritsch got the Lions first hit of the game. It came at the expense of the leg of pitcher Preston Pustejovsky. A liner up the middle hit present and ended up at short. Pustejovsky would see the most traffic he has seen this game after and error puts runners on first and second. A strikeout and a walk later and the bases were loaded. He would strikeout Jack Schley to end the inning with no damage. The Panthers couldn’t do anything in the top of the 5th inning going down in order. The Lions continued with the traffic pattern but this time they would chaptalize on it. Back to back to back singles by Kubala, Supak and Jaeger. Sacrifice flies by Fritsch and Gully added to the damage. Fayetteville would get back in striking distance at the end of the fifth the score was 5-3. In the top of the 7th, a double by Will Kazda and RBI by Hogan Warren turned out to be critical. The Panthers would take a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the frame. Keagan Supak lead off with a double. Two batters later Logan Fritsch plated him. An error and a single by Reid Gross put the winning run on base and forced a pitching change. Riley Sustala took the mound and got a fly out and a strike out to end the game. Abbott is your 2023 1A State Champions. -

China Springs Claims 4A State Championship in 12-Innings In a 4A State Tournament that will go down as one of the craziest of all time, China Spring scored in the bottom of the 12th on a walk off bases loaded walk to beat Texarkana Liberty-Eylau 3-2 and claim the 2023 4A State Championship. The 12-inning affair broke the record for the longest UIL State Championship Game and it comes just 24 hours after China Spring and Sinton set a new record for the longest UIL State Tournament game with their 12 inning game. After a scoreless first two innings, China Spring got on the board first in the bottom of the third. With two outs and two on, Trevor Black tripled to right center scoring JC Hughes and Brenan Daniel and giving China Spring the 2-0 lead. Black not only knocked in the first two runs for China Spring, but he was also shutting out Liberty-Eylau on the mound. He had not given up any hits through three innings and no runs through four innings. But in the 5th Liberty-Eylau finally got on the board. The Leopards loaded the bases and with one out, W.T. Jones grounded out to 1st Base, scoring pinch-runner J.D. Davis to cut China Spring’s lead to 2-1. Liberty-Eylau then tied the game in the sixth. Dylan Garton walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to 2nd. Collin Evans singled Garton over to third. Evans then tried to steal second but was thrown out. On the throw, Garton ran home safely and knotted the game up at 2-2. Neither team could score in the 7th and the championship game headed into extra innings. Liberty-Eylau had several chances in the extra innings. They got a runner to 3B in the 8th inning but couldn’t get him home. In the 10th inning, two walks moved WT Jones to 2B. With two outs, Ayden Easter singled through the right side but Jones was thrown out at home trying to score. China Spring had a runner get to 2B in the 9th, 10th and 11th innings but was never able to advance them any further. Until the 12th inning. With one out in the bottom of the 12th, Black walked and Dillon Bowers singled. New pitcher Miles Vaughn walked to load the bases. Jacob Klement came up to bat and drew a walk to score Black and secure the win for China Spring. Freshman Miles Vaughn was named the 4A Championship Game MVP. He came in to pitch in the 11th inning and shut down the side in the 12th on a fly out, strikeout and a pop out. He was the winning pitcher of the game. With the win, China Spring wins their 5th State Baseball Championship but their first since 2000. Also, Head Coach Cory Beckham became only the 3rd Head Coach in Texas High School Baseball history to win a state title with two different teams. Beckham won back-to-back titles with West High School in 2015 and 2016. -
Look for said RB to get more plays at WR also, this season.

Yes. His Nederland record breaking season receiving yardage total was '01 jr. football season, i believe. Jake Askew- 1,257 yds. 14 td's, 2001 season. Kyndon Fuselier broke his receiving yardage in a season total record his jr. year, the '20 football season, i believe. Both players were legit.
