Not sure about all the area teams. Silsbee played a very tough schedule and went 0-3 but were very competitive. Lost to Carter and iSchool at the buzzer and by 9 to OD Wyatt. Jared Harris receiving a ton of buzz and offers from UT, UofH and SMU. Orangefield went 2-1. After losing a tough one to Chapel Hill by 3 in the opener (in which their top returning player, Pete Ragusa dropped 37), the Bobcats rebounded with a 31 pt win over salado and a 12 point win over Brock.

And I’ve always respected AAW’s strict opposition to it. He’s a purist and I appreciate that. Because if ever a program was geared for the shot clock, it’s the Silsbee tigers. They haven’t had a possession lasting more than 30 seconds since January of 1973…

I agree. That’s the biggest if though. I love the shot clock. But it is imperative you have someone competent to operate it. If not, the whole game is spent with Refs (who let’s face it, are generally not ready for prime time to begin with) consumed with resetting the shot clock to such and such time. As a result, the device intended to speed up games, actually brings them to a grinding halt. I say all that as one of the scoreboard operators of all time. I am dreadful at it. Shot clock is a way more tasking job. You almost need a 4th referee to do it. My thought would be to implement it for 6A and 5A, if you are going to do it. But the other part of me, even though I hate watching teams hold the ball, knows that Milan, Indiana never happens with a shot clock.

And for the record, I was a huge fan of Bullock’s game. In fact, one of those summers, we had a team led by Kam McGusty and JJ Caldwell. Our shooter was a kid named Justin McCormack who became the all time leading scorer at Houston Christian (subsequently passed by Noah Kon). Anyway, McCormack was an incredible shooter, but I told the guy who coached the team there was kid from Dallardsville named Angel who was better.

The following year is the one I was talking about. He led the team with 13 but put up a lot of shots for that 13 as I recall. Just a bad shooting night which happens to everyone. Having said that, guilty as charged as far as being an old head. I did not see them play as much as many of you, but I saw several games in that span. Agree to disagree on who was the best player he coached. Benson was a more complete player in my book. But will agree Thompson was the most talented.

My bad. I was thinking it was just before the move to SA but wasn’t sure. And yes, Angel was crafty around the basket too. Benson just was a more complete player. Including being a far better defender. But I will say that Angel was a better defender than his God given gifts would probably justify, largely due to the basketball iq you speak of. That team definitely could have gotten a ring. But when you rely largely on jump shots, it’s tough to win do or die games at State when you have one where you can’t hit the broad side of the barn.

Tough decision but I really think Kelly will be fine whether the choose Toby or Art Briles. Either should enjoy great success there.

Agree with all of that. Benson was the best player he coached. Angel going Ice cold in Austin was tough to overcome. And he certainly was one of the better shooters around here in the past decade or so. But top to bottom, offense and defense, Williams was clearly better to me. His brother was no slouch either. And Foster is as good as it gets at the HS level. Put him with some programs around here and let him “recruit”, good Lord it would be scary.
