  1. Yes, Nederland and PNG will likely start out with a double header loss at Reliant Stadium. Anything else would be a pretty big upset. The preseason rankings show La Marque and Brenham in the top 5 in the state. It does not take a whole lot of insight and football knowledge to make the prediction on these games. The Mid-County crowds are going to be hoping for that big upset that people will be talking about in years to come and if not, at least make a good showing of it and gain some good experience. Just the fact that the Mid-County schools were invited to play in a double header game for two years in Reliant Stadium is a pretty big deal. I have no idea of the inside dealings on getting the games scheduled but I would imagine it has something to do with the reputation of the fan base. I hardly think Reliant would be a scheduled game for an out of town school that would show up with 500 fans. Just think of the tongues that would be wagging if MC started out 2-0.
  2. And it is not just football. It extends to every sport down to peewee league anything. Little League playoff games between Nederland and Port Neches might draw a larger crowd than most high schools get at regular season baseball games. Some schools might have an arch rival in football, another in baseball and yet another in basketball, etc. With Nederland and PNG, it is anything that you can think of.
  3. If you think MC schools have bad parking, ever been to Vidor?
  4. What a great game also. Nederland was passing for touchdowns and McGuire was running for them. SIlsbee won a barn burner 48-44 in one of those games where it seemed like the last team to touch the ball was going to win.
  5. This thread cries out for people to be homers. If you were busy watching your high school play year after year, who else is going to be your "favorite" player? Maybe your favorite player is an athlete that you rarely saw for your arch rival? I think not. If the title to the thread would have been "who is the best athlete ever from this area" then I can see picking a player from another school. I can just about guarantee that most fan's favorite players were the ones that they went to see week in and week out.

  7. When I see the title "favorite player", I think of a player that someone has seen a number of times and was their favorite to watch. In most cases, I would think that a favorite player to watch would be a home town player, not necessarily the player that made it to the highest level in sports from the area or who was the most famouse. Although there are many great pro players from our area, how many have gone on to the Hall of Fame like Bubba Smith? The only problem is, I never saw Bubba Smith play so he was not my favorite player to watch. With that in mind, I am from Nederland and watched almost every one of their games for the last 40 years. The two players that I really looked forward to seeing were Sean Yoder and Ryan Butler. Both were candidates for the Willie Ray Smith Award and Yoder won it. There are certainly many other great players that went on to loftier careers after they left high school football. They were just not my favorite players to watch since I never saw most of them unless they played Nederland and then only for one, maybe two games. For my enjoyment, those are two players that I looked forward to each week as being dominant on the field in many ways.
  8. I stand corrected. Vidor has been in the playoffs three times in school history, not twice.
